Most of the serious infectious diseases seen in cats and dogs are preventable. A vaccination and deworming schedule started early and kept up to date is the single most effective thing an owner can do.
Schedules are set per animal — by age, species, previous vaccination history and lifestyle. The outline below explains how they are structured.
Kittens and puppies
- A course of vaccinations given in stages, rather than a single injection
- Deworming started young and repeated at intervals advised by the veterinarian
- Protection is only considered complete after the full course — avoid public parks and contact with unknown animals until then
- A health check at each visit, so growth and any early problems are picked up
Adult cats and dogs
- Booster vaccinations at the interval advised for each vaccine
- Routine deworming, typically repeated through the year based on risk
- External parasite control for fleas and ticks — important in a warm climate
- An annual examination, even when the pet appears healthy
Signs of a parasite problem
- A pot-bellied appearance in a kitten or puppy, or poor growth
- Worms or segments visible in stool or around the tail
- Persistent diarrhoea, weight loss despite normal appetite, or dull coat
- Constant scratching, scabs, or visible fleas and ticks
Keeping records
Keep a simple record — date, product given, and the next due date — and bring it to every visit. If you have adopted a rescue pet with no history, an examination is used to plan a safe restart of the schedule.
Frequently asked questions
- My pet never goes outside. Does it still need vaccination?
- Indoor pets are at lower risk but not at no risk — infection can be carried in on clothing and shoes, and pets do escape. Discuss a schedule suited to an indoor lifestyle.
- Can vaccination and deworming be done on the same day?
- Often deworming is done first so that the vaccine is given to a healthier animal. Your veterinarian will advise the order for your pet.
- How do I book preventive care?
- Call 0300 8611713, message on WhatsApp, or use the booking page. Preventive visits run within routine hours, daily 11 AM to 9 PM.
